I have 13 years of experience as a Certified Birth Doula, attending women and families in hospitals, birth centers, and homes in multiple states.
Here are a few of the comfort measures I provide as a doula. One or more may make all the difference to your birth experience!
POSITION CHANGES
Frequent position changes can help keep your labor progressing, alleviate intensity and get your baby into an optimal position. We'll rehearse these at your prenatals.
REMINDERS OF STRENGTH
Remind the mother of her birth plan and that she is capable, strong and perfectly equipped to give birth.
HANDS-ON SUPPORT
I can provide different kinds of counter pressure, massage, acupressure, and the use of calming essential oils and soft lighting to help you feel safe and supported.
PARTNER SUPPORT
Doula support frees your labor partner to remain close to you throughout your experience. Labor often lasts many hours, and the partner needs care too.
REST
Labor is an endurance test! Rest is crucial - before, during, and after labor. I will encourage you (and your partner) to "rest and be grateful" everytime I see an opportunity.
HYDRATION + NOURISHMENT
Your body will need fuel in order to engage in this important work. I will remind you to continually eat, drink, and use the bathroom to help keep labor moving along.
I loved having Kayla as my doula! Her presence is so calming in a time when there can be a lot of stress. I had pretty bad back labor and she showed my husband what he could do to help me relieve some of that pressure in my hips and back, then she would go to my hands and relieve the tension there. Kayla is very knowledgeable and had a lot of tips and tricks. You can tell this is her passion! - SHAYLA
Having Kayla as my doula for the birth of my first child was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! It is clear that this work is not just a job for her but a true calling. Her approach to labor was so reassuring and empowering; she replaced my fears with excitement and confidence. Kayla was fully present throughout the entire process, knowing exactly when to actively support me and when to step back and allow me to experience the moment. She arrived at my home well-prepared, bringing everything needed to help me feel comfortable and at ease as I welcomed my baby boy. I also appreciated how she guided my husband, ensuring he knew how to be involved in meaningful ways. Kayla’s presence made the birth of my son a sacred experience, I am deeply grateful for her support and I want her at every birth! - HEIDI
Kayla was an advocate for me when I was in transition and could not be an advocate for myself. She supported me both physically and emotionally and always with consent. My husband and I would have been lost without her help, having our first baby and without an epidural. I could not have done it without Kayla there. - OLIVIA
I consider Kayla a blessing from God and recommend her strongly to every expecting mother. I believe she is what made it possible for me to have an unmedicated VBAC homebirth with a positive outcome. For the first few months of my pregnancy, I thought I would labor with just my partner and my midwife, who was accompanied by two birth assistants. I truly thank God that I made the decision to hire Kayla as my doula as I entered the last few weeks of my pregnancy. She was there for me before, during and after the birth, always encouraging, and always providing helpful advice. During my intense labor (which was much more intense and overpowering than I had anticipated), she seemed to know just what to do. When she arrived, I felt so much more safe and confident. Her words and comfort measures were just what I needed, throughout the labor and afterwards as I recuperated in bed. It was nothing short of miraculous. Thank you, Kayla! - JENNIFER
Kayla was so helpful to us as we brought our first baby into the world through a natural home birth. She was personable, thoughtful, and caring throughout the entire process. Her preparation and expertise made my wife and I feel supported and empowered every step of the way. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and are so grateful for her guidance during such a special moment in our lives. - AUSTIN
Doula is a Greek word that translates to “female helper”. She is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a mother and her labor partner before, during, and shortly after childbirth.
A birth doula helps them navigate the labor process, make informed decisions, and achieve a positive birth experience, all while acting as a non-medical advocate for their needs and preferences.
There are so many good midwives and obstetricians out there. Not to mention the wonderful labor and delivery nurses found in hospitals all over. However, these care providers often have multiple patients they’re attending to, copious amounts of charting and monitoring, and shift changes.
A doula has one job - YOU - for the entirety of your laboring experience. The benefit of this continuity of care has been studied time and time again - and has been proven to decrease negative outcomes, physically and emotionally, for the laboring woman.
Even if you have a supportive provider and partner, a doula fills an indespensible role in your birth team.
When I was pregnant with my first child in 2001, I heard about doulas through my childbirth educator. My husband and I decided that it sounded like a good idea to hire one to guide us down this path we’d never traveled. Our doula, Melissa, was such a source of comfort during my pregnancy, providing us with information and options I didn’t even know were available to me! Then, when the big day arrived I was grateful for a wonderful midwife and nurse, but they had other patients to attend to as well. Melissa, along with my husband, never left my side. Her continuous, calm, confident care released any fear of the unknown my husband and I had. I was free to tune into my body which was working so powerfully to bring my baby into my arms.
It was a profound and empowering experience for me. And all of that energy overflowed into my mothering of this new little life. I knew I wanted to help other women feel as supported and free in their birthing experiences as I did, so I decided to become a doula myself. Even after all these years, it is still such a privilege to be invited into a family's sacred birthing space. What a gift to get to witness the power of the Divine feminine! - Kayla
